Opening Remarks

Why paint flowers today - after van Gogh, Nolde, or Monet?

The artist presented in the exhibition “Signs of Life” lives and works in Horenka

near Kyiv, not far from Antonov Airport in Hostomel. It was in this region that

the first heavy fighting of the Russian-Ukrainian war began in February 2022.

The works by Alexander Jakowytsch Lykhosherst shown here are painted on

fabrics left behind in the area after the first weeks of the war. At the time, local

residents provided them as improvised privacy screens. Tablecloths, bed

sheets, curtains, and sofa covers now serve as the painting surfaces for his

acrylic works. Their traces, textures, and irregularities remain visible and

significantly shape the visual impact on the paintings.

The poppy occupies a central role in many of the works. It appears as a

recurring motif—both vulnerable and resistant at the same time. Its short

flowering period refers to transience; its bright red color evokes pain and

passion, but also enduring vitality.

“Signs of Life” is not intended as a political statement, but as an artistic

exploration of the vulnerability and persistence of life.

Thanks to the support of atambo tours, almost all of the large-format works

currently available can be presented on two floors in this exhibition.
